Humility: March 30, 2025

Hey everyone! This week's sermon took us into Luke, where Jesus was hanging out in the temple, right before things got really intense. He pointed out two very different kinds of people, and honestly, it got me thinking!

So, we ask, "Who do you admire?" We often think of people with fancy jobs or lots of money, right? But then we hear a story about an 80-year-old guy sweeping the streets, just because he felt God wanted him to work. That really stuck with him, and it made me think too!

Jesus was watching people give their offerings at the temple. You had these flashy religious leaders, the scribes, who loved to show off. They wore these long robes, wanted the best seats, and even prayed loudly just to be seen. Jesus wasn't impressed. He said they were even taking advantage of poor widows, which is just awful!

Then, Jesus spotted a totally different person: a poor widow. She dropped in two tiny coins, basically everything she had. And Jesus said, "Wow!" He said she gave more than anyone else! Why? Because she gave from her heart, out of pure love and obedience.

It's like, imagine someone with a million bucks giving away $700,000. That's generous, sure! But what about the person struggling, who gives their last $20? That's a real sacrifice! And that's what Jesus saw in the widow. He saw her heart.

Here are some takeaways:

  • God looks at our hearts: He doesn't care about the fancy stuff. He cares about our sincerity and love.

  • Humility is powerful: Being humble and obedient, even when nobody's watching, really matters to God.

  • We need to keep each other real: We should help each other stay humble and honest, especially those of us who are in any kind of leadership role.

  • Let's be a church that loves like Jesus: We should care for the poor and the vulnerable, and try to reflect Jesus' heart in everything we do.

We want our church to be a place where Jesus looks around and says, "Wow, you guys get it!" He encouraged us to want to be like the people who are being humble and obedient, instead of the people who are just showing off.

He also announced a future series about what the church is, how we should act, and the importance of accountability, and how we are a family.

Basically, let's try to be like that widow: giving from our hearts, loving God, and loving each other. And let's help each other stay on the right track!
